Finding Purpose
Another great moment from The Shack was when Sarayu spoke about work:
“It’s not the work – but the purpose that makes it special.”
I can’t express how often I feel let down by the work I do at my job. I never thought I’d be one of those people who say, “I don’t love my job, but what keeps me going are the people I work with.” But I am one of those people, now.
In reading The Shack, and this verse in particular, I considered what it is about my job that could make it so special. Perhaps it’s not my favorite thing to do, but in the meantime what about this position is special and how can I learn to be 1) gracious and 2) joyful of the purpose in which I am fulfilling with this job? I mean, it’s customer service for an agency force, right? How can God work through me in a job like that? People only hear my voice, and I can only talk about work-related topics. Really? What is so special about that?
While I don’t want to appear presumptuous of God and the way He works, I imagine we all have a variety of purposes. Each of those purposes depends on what He intends for us at that given moment. Even when it’s something others disagree with; it’s all part of a bigger plan none of us could ever begin to comprehend.
So in the meantime, while I pray and reflect on what my purpose is at my job to make it special, I wonder what your purpose is with your work? Whether your work is in an office, at a school, in your home…what is your purpose?
